TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian national team is set to face Japan in their final Group C match of the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the Asian zone. The match will take place at Suita Football Stadium in Osaka, Japan, on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
Despite playing away, the Garuda squad remains determined to deliver a strong performance. Under the guidance of coach Patrick Kluivert, the Indonesian team acknowledges that Japan, although rotating several key players, continues to be a formidable opponent.
Japan, known as the Blue Samurai, will be eager to bounce back after a narrow 0-1 defeat to Australia in their previous outing. Already assured of a spot in the 2026 World Cup, Japan currently tops Group C with 20 points from nine matches.
Meanwhile, Indonesia has secured a place in the fourth round of qualifiers. The team sits in fourth place in the group standings with 12 points from nine games.
Historically, Japan has held the upper hand in head-to-head meetings. Out of 17 encounters since 1954, Japan has won 10 times, while Indonesia has claimed five victories. Only two matches have ended in a draw.
Their most recent clash took place at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta on November 15, 2024, where Japan won decisively with a 4-0 scoreline. Indonesia’s last victory over Japan in an official match came over four decades ago, in a friendly played in Jakarta on February 24, 1981. On that occasion, the Garuda squad won 2-0.
Since then, the two teams have met four more times, with Indonesia managing just one draw. Based on historical data and current form, this match will be a tough challenge for Indonesia, even earning a draw would be considered an achievement.
